Passion and Planned Giving
At its simplest, planned giving is about systematically building relationships which produce gifts to your organization.
In most instances, the potential donor already has a relationship with your organization. The challenge for the planned giving officer (PGO) is to use planned giving as the vehicle to complement and enhance the existing relationship.
Passion for both your organization and the work you do is the first requirement for success. It is not sufficient to feel your organization's work is nice, or worthy of support, or important. You must first believe your organization's mission is essential. You must believe your work is essential to the accomplishment of your organization's mission. There must be passionate belief the essential work of your organization may fail if you do not succeed. |
But raw passion is not enough. A PGO must apply passion systematically.
Because there is not enough time to develop relationships with all donors, the PGO must continuously winnow his list to those with whom there is the greatest chance for success. You must have discipline to focus your effort, and you must have a systematic approach to channel your discipline.
Assured you are passionate about your work and systematic about applying your passion, the next requirement is a systematic search for a donor who shares your passion. And it is not sufficient simply to find a donor passionate about the work of your organization; you also must have a deliberate, systematic process to discover a way for the donor to make a planned gift to support that work.
Roger has developed systematic approaches that go far beyond theory - he trains others to systematically articulate their passion and develop their own unique put-it-to-work today practices that get them focused, out of the office, building relationships with donors, and producing gifts.
